Marya DeGrow
Marya is a Research Associate for the Education Policy Center at the Independence Institute. A key member of the team that designed the School Choice for Kids Web site, she now oversees and maintains the site and the Education Policy Center Web pages. Her research area of focus is school choice, including online schools, contract schools, charter schools, vouchers, tax credits, and homeschooling. Marya has written the Issue Papers Contract Schools Bring Innovative New Choices to Denver Public Schools, Delta County School District Has VISION for School Choice, and Cutting Back on Catching Up: Reducing the Need for Remediation in Colorado Higher Education.
Marya, a life-long homeschooler, began interning at the Independence Institute in 1994 at the age of 14. She assisted with various office work, including the initial data entry for what would become the first School Report Cards published by the Independence Institute. She left the Institute to work closer to home when she learned to drive. She was summoned back to the Institute in the spring of 1997 to help maintain the School Report Cards. In the fall of 1998, Marya enrolled at Hillsdale College in Hillsdale, Michigan, but continued to work part-time at the Institute during Christmas and summer breaks. After graduating in May 2002 with a B.A. in Political Economy, Marya became a permanent part-time staff member at the Institute.
In her free time, Marya reads, gardens, and spends quality time with her daughters Kyria and Elizabeth, and husband Ben DeGrow.
