About the Event
Denver, CO - At the Independence Institute's annual Founders Dinner, a sobering yet
inspirational speech was delivered to an audience which included Colorado Governor Bill
Owens. The keynote speaker that night was Mr. David Horowitz, a well known
radical-turned-conservative iconoclast. Mr. Horowitz's remarks drew sharply
contrasting images of the political tactics used by the Left and the Right.
Conservatives, and Republicans in particular, Mr. Horowitz warns, ignore this difference
at their own peril.
Mr. Horowitz is the President of the Center for the Study of Popular Culture, and as a
best-selling author, editor and cultural critic, he may be best known for his lifelong
intellectual and political journey.
In the 1960's Horowitz became a leader of the New Left
as editor of Ramparts magazine, an influential left-wing journal. In the 1970's,
dissatisfied with the consequences of radical policies in America and abroad, Horowitz
withdrew from politics. He and his partner Peter Collier then co-authored a series
of best-selling biographies of prominent American families.
During the Eighties, Horowitz's second thoughts about
politics crystallized. In their 1989 book Destructive Generation: Second
Thoughts about the Sixties, Collier and Horowitz chronicled the legacy of the New
Left and its effects on American politics and culture.
Horowitz's political journey is recounted in his
autobiography Radical Son, which was published by the Free Press in
February 1997. His most recent book, Hating Whitey and Other Progressive
Causes, describes how the Left now uses racism as a destructive tool in its bid
for political domination. Mr Horowitz also writes a regular column for the Internet
magazine FrontPage Magazine.
