About the Event

Golden, CO -  Stephen Goldsmith served as mayor of Indianapolis, the nation's 12th largest city, from 1992 to this year. His two-term tenure attracted nationwide attention and earned him a reputation as one of America's most pioneering mayors.  Goldsmith transformed Indianapolis into a laboratory for free-market solutions to urban issues. Goldsmith axed hundreds of patronage jobs, insisted that city agencies compete against private organizations for contracts, and he pushed to let religious organizations provide social services. Indianapolis is now a Mecca for urban innovation.

These accomplishments put Goldsmith on Texas Governor George Bush's radar screen.  He is now Bush's top domestic policy advisor, earning the nickname "Bush's Guru" from Newsweek magazine.  Most speculate that Goldsmith will continue his close relationship with G.W. Bush by accepting a top post in the possible Bush White House.

From his opening remarks through extensive anecdotal evidence, Mr. Goldsmith, a Senior Fellow at the Manhattan Institute , describes the challenge and successes he and the people of Indianapolis experienced throughout the 1990's as the promise of privatization became reality.
